What is a Periodontist?
A Periodontist is the specialist for the gums and bone including the roots of the teeth and their supporting structures. A Periodontist's training includes 4 years of college, 4 years of dental school, and at least 2 additional years specializing in the field of periodontics. Once training is complete, a Periodontist restricts their treatment to the periodontal structures (gums, bone, periodontal ligament, roots of the teeth and now dental implants). Because a Periodontist spends their entire day, every day performing periodontal procedures and treating periodontal conditions, they are very skilled and knowledgeable in the field. A Periodontist is not only the expert in identifying and treating periodontal (gum) disease, but also in helping to keep the gums and bone healthy and free of disease.
